This lecture-oriented seminar will examine the creative genius and multi-faceted talent of the most enduring, controversial, and productive American filmmaker of our time.

It will cover every facet of Allen’s life, from his  childhood to his emerging days in Greenwich Village, and from his burgeoning career at United Artists to the present day.

We will cover his career from childhood to the early days of standup comedy (recordings of which will be played in the workshop) to a film career that has so far spanned 42 films.

We will study Allen as a director, screenwriter, comedian, actor and prose writer, and we will study his ten best films in depth. Topics will also include his existential philosophy, economic and artistic independence, and strong work ethic, as well as his Jewish identity and his preoccupation with the Holocaust.

We will trace his astounding comeback from the scandal of 1992 to the present, where, despite resurfacing of the same accusations against him,  he remains one of the most powerful and influential filmmakers in the world, garnering his third Oscar for best original screenplay for “Midnight in Paris” in 2011 and a nomination for best screenplay for “Blue Jasmine” in 2014.

This course will cover:

  • Allen’s early years as standup comic in Greenwich Village and the Catskills
  • The United Artists years
  • His ten best films
  • His philosophy
  • His legacy as a filmmaker
