EARLY BIRD PRICING: $600; Regular price: $650
Location: The Writers Room, 740 Broadway, 12th Floor, New York, NY 10003

The key to making it as a writer is versatility. Whether you’re blogging or writing a personal essay, a Q&A, a service piece or a straight-up, researched news piece, you should be able to tackle any task, put your own distinct voice into it and wow any editor. In this workshop you’ll learn how to do just that.

We’ll write and workshop a new piece each week for the first four weeks. We’ll spend the next few weeks editing, revising and polishing these pieces and working on pitches. At the end of the session, you’ll have an opportunity to pitch at a pitch-palooza to heavy-hitting New York editors.

In this class you will learn:

  • Where to look for and how to come up with saleable ideas
  • How to pitch, as well as the best magazine, newspaper or website for your pitch
  • How to find sources
  • How to put yourself into your writing and develop your own distinct voice
  • How to edit and re-write
  • How to connect with industry insiders

Student Testimonials

~~Professor Nicola Ruiz was a professor unlike any other. She came into every class with a smile on her face and ready to motivate her students. Being in her class, I was faced with challenging thought as she asked us to reach deep into our minds and pull out our autobiographies. She always presented us with a question that she wanted us to answer but not simply by raising our hands but through writing and story telling. Inspiring is one of the best words I can use to describe Professor Ruiz. The first day of class she made it very clear that just like us, she was a person with her own story. Students tend to give their professors the “teachers have no lives” stereotype but we were not like that with her. She was real and raw and that’s what I appreciate most about her. She motivated me to share my story with others upon completion. I shared my story with my dean and landed a job in the field that I love. Professor Ruiz is not just a professor, but an empowering motivator. Melissa Buccella
