Being a successful novelist is winning a cerebral triathlon: The first challenge of just writing a novel takes years of work. The second contest is selling the book to an agent – and even harder, a publisher. The final battle is winning a readership. In this 8-week intensive course you’ll have your fiction workshopped by a working novelist who has learned more lessons – and about more contradictions – than can be conveniently packaged into a simple how-to book.

This class will cover:

  • The slow steady discipline of writing a novel–some tricks for dealing with writers block.
  • Conception, structuring and outlining of a novel.
  • The fine art of redrafting your pages.
  • How other writers have dealt with common problems.
  • Turning negative criticism into constructive notes.
  • Overcoming rejection and bad news.
  • The byzantine process of getting published, addressing some basic fallacies of the industry, navigating the business end, choosing between large press and small press, negotiating basic boilerplate contracts and dealing with agents, editors and, later, filmmakers.
  • Handling publicity and planning your next novel.

The workshop will meet for two hours once a week, and will be conducted in a relaxed, supportive setting. Each class will include a workshop of  some of your pieces, both novel and short fiction, as well as a lecture on some of the bullet points.
